De Amerikaanse singer-songwriter Bill Callahan, ooit opererend onder de naam Smog maar sinds 2007 onder eigen naam, maakt prachtige en veelal duistere indiefolk en alt. country. Met zijn zware, donkere stem neemt hij je aan de hand mee door zijn poëtische teksten.
Nieuwste wapenfeit My Days of 58is alweer het achtste onder zijn eigen naam, en zijn eerste sinds 2022. Voor de opnames werkte hij samen met gitarist Matt Kinsey, saxofonist Dustin Laurenzi en drummer Jim White. Muzikanten waarmee hij eerder tourde. De onderlinge chemie zorgt ervoor dat de plaat de energie van de liveshows ademt: intuïtief, ontspannen en met volop ruimte improvisatie. Nathan Bowles uit Durham, North Carolina beweegt zich tussen Appalachen oldtime en minimalistische drone. Vanavond speelt hij een soloset waarin banjo, percussie en elektronica samenkomen. Op zijn recente album Seven Lefts staat zijn eigenzinnige clawhammerbanjo centraal. Bowles ziet zichzelf in de eerste plaats als percussionist, wat zijn spel een sterk ritmisch karakter geeft. Tijdens zijn optredens combineert hij eigen werk en traditionals met zelfgemaakte tapeloops en keyboard.

His latest release, My Days of 58, is already his eighth album under his own name and his first since 2022. For the recordings, he reunited with guitarist Matt Kinsey, saxophonist Dustin Laurenzi, and drummer Jim White, musicians he previously toured with. Their strong chemistry allows the album to breathe the energy of his live shows: intuitive, relaxed, and full of space for improvisation. It gave Callahan the confidence to let go of safe perfection and make room for the unexpected.
